The Lost Civilization of You and Me
One day, the cloud-shift will cover our bones,
and the road that once led down the street to our home,
will be covered in snow.
Everything will be different; everywhere you go.
Everything we loved will one day rot,
everything we once dreamed here, and everything we did not,
will be shut up in boxes, in dust, in silences, in graves,
and then, one day, no one will be left to remember our names.
Where our bodies once laid, in the beds in our rooms,
will become like craters you can see from the moon.
Where you spilled the red nail polish on the hardwood floor,
where I lost a tooth tied to the bedroom door,
they will set up monuments, then forget what they’re for.
History teachers won’t ask the right questions –
while they’re making up their school-day lessons,
They will ask, “Did they have tools; did they have war?
And who was their God and what was he for?”
In museums, they will hang our childhood drawings like works of art,
In psychology books, they will take us apart,
But they won’t ask about the colors of all of our eyes,
All they will ask is – “How did they die?”
From our ruins, they will try to assemble a past,
piecing us together like bits of stained glass,
wondering how it is we all came to be –
the lost civilization of you and of me. |
